Zurich, July 6, 2017

CRIF AG analyzed the number of companies established in the first six months of 2017 and the number of companies removed in the same period. During the period in question, 21,925 new undertakings were established overall.
Conversely, 15,272 companies were removed from the Business Register. The largest number of new registrations occurred in the following cantons: Zürich (3,956), Vaud (2,285), Bern (1,820), Geneva (1,778), Aargau (1,335) and Ticino (1,215).

A comparison of the newly established companies and those removed from the register shows a net growth. The canton of Zürich stands out with a positive balance of 1,507 companies, followed by Vaud (831), Aargau (540), Lucerne (412), St. Gallen (360) and Bern (359). On the other hand, there was a negative balance in the canton of Obwalden.

Looking at the individual sectors, retail trade had the highest number of openings (1,784), quickly followed by construction (1,733), management consultancy (1,663), real estate (1,189) and catering services (1,125). Regarding companies removed from the register, again retail trade registered the highest number of closures (1,552), followed by wholesale (1,451), construction (1,311), catering services (1,153) and management consultancy (818).

About the assessment
All new companies registered on the Business Register between January and June 2017 were taken into account, and all companies in the same period that were removed from the Business Register. A company can be removed, for example, due to expulsion, within the context of suspension of bankruptcy proceedings, at the deadline for the repayment of liquidity, in the case of mergers, or company closures due to a lack of business succession.
